Telecom Regulators of South Asia Meet in Colombo

Senior officials representing telecommunication regulatory bodies of eight South Asian countries and Iran, met in Colombo on 15th and 16th July, 2010 to map out a strategy related to strengthening Network and Services in the region.

These officials belong to the ‘Working Group (WG) on Network and Services’, which was established pursuant to a decision taken at the 11th meeting of South Asian Telecom Regulators’ Council (SATRC) held in Colombo, Sri Lanka from 24 – 26 November 2009. This endeavour represents the implementation of phase-3 of the Action Plan for the duration of 2010-2011. These WG meetings are chaired by a Senior Official representing the Telecommunications Regulatory Communication (TRCSL) of Sri Lanka.

This WG is required to study and submit its Recommendations/Reports/Guidelines on the following subjects:

    Ensuring quality mobile handsets to South Asian Consumers
    Evolution of NGN and NGA : Interconnection Tariffs in SATRC countries
    Retail Tariffs: QOS sensitive pricing for IP based services
    Roaming and International Tariffs


for purpose of discussion/ adoption at the next SATRC meeting.

The primary purpose of the meeting held on July 15 and 16th at the premises of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka, was to develop and establish Terms of Reference (TOR) for the work program of the Working Group.  The officials from Nepal, India, Bhutan and Sri Lanka made presentations covering the aforesaid topics.
