The 12th Global Symposium for Regulators was declared open today (October 2) by President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Colombo Hilton Hotel in the presence of over 500 high – level foreign delegates drawn from nearly 100 countries across the globe.
In his opening address the President thanked the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for having selected Sri Lanka as the venue for this Global Symposium and stressed on the high priority the Government of Sri Lanka was giving towards placing Sri Lanka at the cutting edge of new technologies such as broadband mobile and the spread of digital technology throughout the country.
President Rajapaksa was joined on the podium by Dr HamadounTouré, Secretary – General of the ITU; Hon. Tissa Vitarana, Minister of Science and Technology; Hon. Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, Minister of Telecommunication and Information Technology, Sri Lanka; Hon. Dr. Keheliya Rambukwella, Minister of Media and Information; Dr Sarath Amunugama, Deputy Minister of Finance & Planning, Sri Lanka; Mr Lalith Weeratunga, Chairman, TRCSL; Mr Anusha Palpita, Director-General of TRCSL; and top ITU officials Mr Houlin Zhao (Deputy-Secretary-General) and Mr Brahima Sanou (Director, Telecommunication Development Bureau [BDT]).
