Modification of Licences granted to Dialog Axiata PLC and Bharti Airtel Lanka (Pvt) Ltd.
The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (“the Commission”) was set up as the independent regulator under the Telecommunications (Amendment) Act No. 27 of 1996, and was is responsible for regulating telecommunications sector in Sri Lanka including managing the radiofrequency spectrum.
The Minister granted licences under Section 17 (2) of the Sri Lanka Telecommunications Act, No. 25 of 1991 as amended (“the Act”) to Dialog Axiata PLC and Bharti Airtel Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. on 28.09.1993 and 12.04.2007 respectively to operate telecommunications systems, collectively referred to hereinafter as the "mobile Operators.
The Commission, in accordance with the authority conferred upon it under Section 18(1) of the Act, proposes to make modifications to the licences granted to mobile Operators. The effect of the modifications is to permit the request of the mobile Operators to provide mobile Internet service in highly populated areas such as in hotels, shopping complexes etc. using Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) technology that would significantly improve the Quality of Service as a result of reducing the network congestion.
The public is hereby noticed under Section 18(2) of the Act that the Commission proposes to recommend to His Excellency the President the licence modifications of mobile Operators.
The public is hereby further noticed that representations or objections to the proposed licence modifications could be made not later than 30th May 2012. The representations and objections should be in writing and addressed to Director General, Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka.
